As learners and leaders, it’s essential to look at life as an interconnected, interdependent system — or a network of systems that collide, mingle, and amplify one another.

Take note of the systems you occupy. How are they shaping you and others? Systems have power, but you can manipulate and shape those systems too.

Here are five practices for cultivating systems intelligence:

1. Eliminate Toxicity in the Workplace.

First, turn the statement, “My workplace isn’t toxic,” into a question: “Who might it be toxic for?” One of the most profound realizations of systems intelligence is that if it works for you, it likely does not work for someone else.

2. Create Opportunities for Rest and Renewal

Real and imagined, there is a constant sense of urgency in most organizations. But when you create moments for rest and renewal, you make time for reflection. You allow space for connection and clarity about the WHAT and, more importantly, the WHY behind your work.

3. Be Socially and Environmentally Responsible

You can’t possess systems intelligence and NOT think about how your actions and decisions affect the world around you. Understanding how systems work in you and through you invites divine providence to pursue a better workplace and world.

4. Focus on Sufficiency Rather than Scarcity

A scarcity mindset will always create division. When you fear that someone else’s gain directly erodes yours, you will always be looking for ways to diminish or deplete others. Know and believe that you have enough, that you are enough, and that everything you need is accessible.

5. Act with a Profound Sense of Responsibility

When you’re a leader, people put their lives and livelihoods in your hands. Treat that with the respect that it deserves. Honor them in your actions and words, be impeccable in your agreements, and make commitments that people can believe in.
